James è nato il 25 Luglio del 1985 ad Hermet, California (USA) sotto il segno del Leone, da Jeffrey D. Lafferty e Angelica M. Escarsega, sposati dal 16 febbraio 1985. Ha una fratello minore, Stuart Lyle Lafferty nato l'1 ottobre 1987, che è stato guest star in due episodi di One Tree Hill. James ha frequentato la Hemet High School a Hemet, California dove si è diplomato nel 2003. James ha intrapreso la carriera di attore all'età di sette anni. A 10 anni è stato premiato per la sua prima parte parlata e da allora ha partecipato a numerosi show Tv e film. Il suo primo ruolo regolare è stato nella sitcom "Emeril" dove faceva la parte del figlio di Emeril. Ha avuto una parte nel film televisivo "A Season on the Brink" con Brian Dennehy, dove James interpretava Steve Alford, la star della squadra di Basket dell'Università di Indiana. E' stato inoltre una guest star nelle serie "Once and Again" , "Boston Public" e "Get Real". Era nel cast del film indipendente "Boys On The Run". Attualmente vive con tre coinquilini a Wilmington, North Carolina, dove viene girato One Tree Hill, serie televisiva ora trasmessa dalla CW dove James interpreta Nathan Scott, e dove sostiene finanziariamente una squadra professionale di basket. Da grande fan del basket e , come il suo personaggio, è un bravo giocatore. Ha giocato nella squadra del Varsity alle superiori ed è stato premiato agli MVP award. Gli piace anche andare in spiaggia e giocare a football con i suoi amici

Nathan Scott è il più grande giocatore del liceo di Tree Hill ed è anche un bullo! è uno spaccone e si comporta sempre male con tutti, soprattutto con Lucas che è il suo fratellastro. Fino a quando non incontra la sua principessa che lo fa diventare una persona meravigliosa !
